If you were to continually fill a cup with water it will eventually overflow and spill on to the floor.
Understanding and managing capacity is having the clarity to ensure that all the critical tasks to build a growing business are successfully completed. As we get busier our cup gets fuller, and what capacity does is force us to make decisions.
Businesses are defined by the poor decisions – or otherwise – that are made on a daily basis due to capacity.
In an earlier post I said we are drawn to the transaction because we are told that’s where the money is. As we continually chase the transaction our cup is filled with distractions. As we reach our capacity, the things that overflow on to the floor, like the water, are all the tasks that we actually need to do in order to build a sustainable and long-term business.
Understanding and managing capacity is one of the essential ingredients of growth.
